Frequently Asked Questions

If you can’t find the answer to your question about Safety Certificates/ Roadworthy Inspections then feel free to contact Andy’s Mobile Safety Certificates any time. Remember, we can provide roadworthy certificates for cars, caravans, trailers and boat trailers anywhere on the Gold Coast.

Q.  I need a roadworthy for my vehicle but I am out in the Hinterland. Will you come out this far?

A.  Yes. Our Mobile Safety Certificate/ Roadworthy Certificate service will travel anywhere on the Gold Coast and surrounding regions to examine cars, trailers, boat trailers and caravans. We can come to your home or workplace, wherever you are!

Q.  What is a Safety Certificate?

A.  A Safety Certificate covers basic vehicle operations to ensure a minimum level of safety of vehicles being bought or sold, and second hand or interstate vehicles registered in Queensland. We follow a strict Code of Practice issued by QLD Transport. The inspection examines tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, windscreen, lights, and rust and damage to the bodywork.

Q.  What is the difference between a ‘Safety Certificate’ and a ‘Roadworthy Certificate’?

A.  There is no difference. ‘Safety Certificate’ is the new name for a ‘Roadworthy Certificate’, or RWC, but they are exactly the same, it’s just that many people still use the older term Roadworthy Certificate.

Q.  Do you accept EFTPOS / credit cards?

A.  Yes! We can take EFTPOS/credit card payment for issuing Safety Certificates as well as any repairs to your vehicle if they are required.

Q.  What happens if my car/trailer/caravan/light truck does not pass the inspection?

A.  If the vehicle does not pass the safety inspection you have 14 days to carry out any repairs. If repairs are not done within 14 days, the Safety Certificate is cancelled and you will need to get a new one. We can bring your vehicle to our workshop (even if it is unregistered) and carry out any repairs required to pass the inspection.

Q.  My car needs some repairs but is out of rego. Can you help?

A.  Yes we can. We hold a Dealers Plate so we can legally drive your vehicle to our workshop to perform any work required.

Q.  When can you do my safety inspection?

A.  Most of the time we offer a same day service! We will carry out your safety inspection at a time that suits you. We can issue Safety Certificates on the spot, so you can sell or buy that vehicle straightaway.

Q.  I’m selling my car/caravan/trailer, when do I need to get a Safety Certificate?

A.  You must display the Safety Certificate on any registered vehicle as soon as you put it up for sale, this includes listing the vehicle for sale online, put a ‘for sale’ or ‘interested? call…’ sign or similar on the vehicle, or placing it in public for sale. The Safety Certificate must be clearly displayed. Failure to do so can incur a $550 fine.

Q.  How long does a Safety Certificate last in Queensland?

For private sellers, Safety Certificates are valid for two months or 2000 kilometres, whichever comes first. A Safety Certificate can be used for one transfer of registration within this time. For dealers, Safety Certificates are valid for 1000 kilometres or three months, whichever comes first. NOTE: A new Safety Certificate is required each time you sell the vehicle, even if it is within the two months or 2000 kilometres.

Q.  Does my boat trailer need a Safety Certificate?

A.  If the ATM is over 750kg (which most often it is), then the trailer requires a Safety Certificate. The ATM of the boat trailer can be found on the registration papers. All dual axle trailers require a Safety Certificate.

Q.  Is the TARE the same as the ATM?

A.  No. The ATM (aggregated trailer mass), also called GTM (gross trailer mass) is the combined weight of the trailer with its maximum load, this is measured when the trailer is not attached to a vehicle. The TARE is the weight of the trailer without any load on it. An easy way to find it is by looking at compliance plates or registration papers, the TARE is always the lower weight in kg.
