Not all boat trailers require safety certificates. A trailer with an ATM of 750kg or less not fitted with a braking system does not require a safety certificate for registration/ transfer or renewal. If the trailer of this size is not currently registered in QLD, you must fill out the trailer self-assessment sheet, follow the instructions on this sheet/form and fill in a new registration form.
It is important to check the registration papers of boat trailers, if the ATM is over 750kg which most often it is; the trailer requires a safety certificate.
When looking at compliance plates and registration papers be careful not to mistake the TARE for the ATM. TARE is the lower weight in kg of the two and refers to the trailer without any load on it. Many boat trailers will weigh less than 750kg without the boat on it but the regulations refer to the fully loaded trailer (ATM).
Such things as all the lights, tyres, tread depth, wheel bearings, braking system, tow coupling, safety chain, suspension, chassis condition, are all part of the inspection.
